We all agree that the internet is a wonderful resource for our students. They can use the internet to research information for school reports, communicate with other students as well as their teachers, and play interactive games, educational or otherwise just for fun. We can literally access the world!

Although, with that being said, the internet can pose dangers to our children. It is important for us to be aware of what our kids see and hear on the internet, as well as who they meet and what information they share online about themselves. For the first time in history, our curriculum is located on the "same street" as the Porn Book Stores. But, at the same time, we can't always keep kids off the streets, only direct them away from the bad neighborhoods.

Let's place some resources on this Wiki that we can share with each other for teaching lessons about on-line safety, cyber bullying, digital etiquette, and information privacy. Good resources to include would be websites, videos, and interactive games or activities.

I would like to share the following:

Cindi-- I am recommending an article written my friend Annette Lamb. She is a former media specialist and full professor from Indiana University. She is continually researching tools and resources appropriate for K-12 classrooms.

See Filtering Tools and Issues.

Julie- My kids LOVE Professor Garfield. He has a couple of lessons on Internet safety.
I am not sure what grades you teach but here are some sites that I use for internet safety at my school with my kids:
https://sos.fbi.gov
http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/5_7/hectorsworld/
http://disney.go.com/surfswell/script.swf
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-internet-safety-games-kids-cyber-smart/ This one has several games on it.
It your school is willing to purchase EASYTECH there are a lot of great lessons on there.

I look forward to coming back to your wiki to see what else everyone has shared here with you.

Hi Cindi, you might want to take a look at Commonsensemedia.org.

Cindi,

I found this video on YouTube. It shows that there are types of indirect bullying, which includes cyber bullying.

Cindy, I think this is a great start to your wiki. My suggestion would be to possibly create some nested pages, with links on the main page, to better organize the information that other people share. So, for example, you could create a page each for on-line safety, cyber bullying, digital etiquette and information privacy so that people reading your wiki can find the resources just for the area they are teaching. You could also have additional nested pages, perhaps dividing resources and tolls into one, with lesson plans on the other. If it's all on the main page, it will get very long, and be difficult to find what you're looking for.

Cindy,
This is awesome, I was just talking to my students about this in Career Management. I found this website that went in detail what cyber-bullying was ways to prevent it, and reporting it.

Cindy Gebbia - Thank you everybody for contributing excellent resources and recommendations for my wiki! Over the next few months I will hopefully be able to rearrange the pages so the resources will be easy to locate!
